Each of our residents has a story of their own! We'll share bios for each of them here, as well as updates on the happenings at the Sanctuary.
Lassie is a nine year old Australian Shepherd who joined the Sanctuary in January 2019. Upon arrival, Lassie weighed a mere 35 pounds, had a glucose level of 685, and her blood work indicated that her liver was "completely shut down". After a roller coaster battle to get her diabetes under control and an emergency surgery to remove a rapidly growing three pound mass from her abdomen, Lassie is now thriving!!! She is blind since her diabetes went untreated for an unknown length of time so we are working with her on a daily basis to help her navigate her surroundings.
Update: We lost our beloved Lassie girl on 11/6/2019 after a courageous battle. We love you Lassie Lass!!! Until we meet at the Bridge.... ♥ Daisy, the nine year old Papillon/Chi, was returned to our local Humane Society a couple times due to her excessive urinating and blindness. We knew immediately that she needed a thorough check by our vet, and her lab work came back confirming diabetes. She has since been on a very controlled diet and insulin, and is doing great! She has even regained some of her eyesight. Daisy is a total sweetheart and she has been with us since May 2018.

Seven year old Todo, a Shiba Inu mix, was born without eyes and with facial abnormalities. Considering his cranial deformities, it is possible that he has hydrocephaly, but that is not confirmed. What we do know is that he is hyper-sensitive to his surroundings and his natural way to respond is in a defensive/protective manner. Unfortunately, his natural response prevented him from passing the behavioral test at our local Humane Society, so they reached out to us. Todo is a wonderful pup who just needs a little understanding! He and his "seeing-eye dog" Mater are very content and loved here. Todo absolutely adores the ten year old human that helps care for him!
Coati was found in the desert in a nearby town in July 2017. He was literally skin and bones and required immediate veterinary care (1st picture). With lots and lots of love and care, Coati made a fairly quick recovery (2nd picture). His adorable face resembles that of a Coatimundi, hence his name. Coati now lives for meal and nap times, and he loves to lick ankles! Out Little Man survived a vicious bout of pneumonia in June 2019. Unfortunately, Coati does have chronic cough and an enlarged heart. We will take the very best care of him for as long as we can.
Update on 1/29/2020: Coati has been struggling with another round of pneumonia for the past three months. He has been on multiple medications and has had numerous xrays. We're hoping we can get this under control soon so he can get back to being his amazing happy self! Old man Tito joined the Sanctuary in September 2019. We were told that he is 20 years old. Although we don't have any solid proof that he's 20, he is most certainly very old! He is completely deaf, mostly blind, and is a bit wobbly in the rear legs, but he's a total sweetheart! This adorable Pomeranian is in desperate need of a dental and he has a growth on the roof of his mouth that needs to be removed. Luckily his blood work came back favorable, so his surgery will be scheduled very soon! For now, he's on wet food only.
